Caffeine Intake Recommendations

Caffeine is a stimulant that many of us have a hard time getting through the day without! Fortunately, just because you are pregnant does not mean you have to eliminate this completely from your diet. However, based on recommendations made by ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) and the March of Dimes, we recommend cutting caffeine intake to less than 200mg of caffeine a day.

Remember, lots of things contain caffeine—chocolate, coffee, tea, soft drinks, hot cocoa, and some foods. Even some headache medications contain caffeine. Below is a table to some common items and the amount of caffeine they contain. Remember, this is only an average as different brands of coffees and teas contain varying amounts of caffeine.

Coffee—12 ounces 200mg
Soft drink—12 ounce can 37mg
Tea, 8 ounces brewed 48mg
Chocolate syrup—1 tablespoon 3mg
Chocolate milk—8 ounces 5-8mg
Hot cocoa—12 ounces 8-12 mg
Milk chocolate candy bar 11mg
Coffee ice cream—1/2 cup 2mg
